What is the ‘SCAREWARE’?
Be aware of the ‘cold call’ from a scammer saying they represent Microsoft or some other company, i.e., McAfee, Norton, etc. The caller indicates that they have been notified that your computer has been infected with viruses and malware. They then remotely gain access to the computer and navigate their way throughout the system to essentially do what they want without you being any the wiser, e.g., deactivating antivirus software and installing a virus. They then indicate that the virus can removed for a fee ranging from $50 – $500 or more! Given the OK they will collect the funds and leave the virus/malware installed. The tip off comes usually when the representative is asked for some proof of legitimacy such as a callback number or a website. The representative will dismiss this inquiry by saying that they are not allowed to give out their number but will direct the owner to a legitimate website (not their own by the way) adding credibility to their status.
What can you do?
Become an informed user. Today, we are being bombarded with new and powerful technological devices. More often than not we plunge ourselves into the new device with the attitude: “I can do this!” Most of us don’t understand how it does what it does but who cares as long as we get to ‘pay dirt’. The hackers who create the chaos are having a field day in generating the invasive artificial intelligence that is worming its way through the operating system of our devices and peeking at our private files and observing our Skype video calls real-time all the while with us thinking we are safe and sound in the privacy of our home. Social sites have become a Mecca for the hackers. Millions of people are giving up their identities to the social sites by telling their life stories and flooding their home page with photo upon photo of themselves their children and fail to understand that once this information has been put out there on the vast internet it cannot be taken back! EVER! Remember that the hackers have ways of attaching invasive software onto downloadable Free Games, Free Music, Free anything which heighten the risk of your system being infected. Know in advance where you are going on the internet and keep your operating system and virus software up-to-date.
