2013 Cancer Survivors

Participants from Genesee County will come together on August 23, 2014, to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers at the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Batavia. Tributes will also be paid to those who have lost their battle to cancer. Funds raised will support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people get well, stay well, find cures, and fight back.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where hundreds of volunteers, walkers, families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies, individuals and teams camp out, join in fun activities for the whole family, dance, and take turns walking, running or otherwise moving around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, candles are lit in honor of cancer survivors or to remember loved ones lost to cancer in a visually and emotionally moving luminaria ceremony.

Fighting Back Against CancerRelay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. Since 1985, Relay For Life has spread to more than 5,000 communities, and 23 countries across the country ensuring that millions of cancer survivors celebrate their birthdays again this year.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
