Hang Around Victor Day Celebrates Student Musicians

On September 6, 2008, Hang Around Victor Day will pay tribute to Robert Michael Malley, the Founder of ‘The Battle of the Bands,’ a musical celebration of young, emerging musicians which has become synonymous with Hang Around Victor Day.

Malley was President of the Victor Chamber of Commerce until his untimely death on October 6, 2007.  A passionate music lover, he launched the Battle of the Bands in 2007 as a way to showcase the work of high school musicians.

‘Rob loved music and particularly rock and roll,’ his sister Patty Malley explained. ‘He wrote his first song on a plastic guitar that was a Christmas Gift from Santa.’  She went on to share, ‘As an adult, when he saw that many kids in schools didn’t have instruments, and music was one of the first areas cut in financial crises, he wanted to change that.  Battle of the Bands was his way of letting kids share their passion for music and giving them the opportunity to be a Rock Star for a day.  He’d be honored and thrilled with this tribute.’

This year’s Battle of the Bands will take place in Mead Square Park off Main Street in downtown Victor, and will run from Noon to 5 p.m.
