Brockport Central School’s 2nd Annual Homecoming Parade will take place in downtown Brockport on Friday, October 4th at 5:30pm. The parade will start west on College street, heading south down Utica Street, west onto Adams Street and finishing south down Allens Street (through the school campus) and ending at Dahn Walrath Memorial Stadium.
This year’s parade theme is “Networks.” The freshmen class will represent Comedy Central as its network; sophomores have the Cartoon Network; juniors have ESPN and seniors have the Disney Channel. Alumni from the 1980s are planning an MTV themed float. The parade will be the culmination of Spirit Week activities.
At the high school, Monday will be “Class Color Day”; Tuesday “Rainbow/Tie Dye Day”; Wednesday “Workout Wednesday”; Thursday “Wear your Favorite Sports Team Day” and Friday the traditional “Blue and White Day”. The high school pep rally on Friday will feature intense competition between classes as they participate in activities ranging from a pie eating contest to an egg toss.
Brockport students will also be putting the finishing touches on their floats, in hopes of winning the class competition and bragging rights for the year. During the parade, a panel of 5 judges will rank floats on the basis of on appearance, music, costumes, workmanship, and theme. Floats sponsored by local businesses and community groups will have the option of being judged, if they desire.
The Homecoming committee is hoping to build upon the success of last year’s parade, which was reinstituted after at least a ten year hiatus. There were over 50 floats last year; the goal for this year is to raise $4000 in sponsorships, with 75 participating groups and 1,000 participants. A wide variety of participants are expected, with firm commitments from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Lions Club, Brockport High School, and other various members of the community.
“This parade is a tradition in the making,” explained Amanda Stroh. “The [tradition] was passed down to me by the 2013 senior class president. After serving a term as the 2014 class Vice President, I will pass it down to the 2015 class President or Vice President.” Amanda co-chairs the Brockport Homecoming Committee, along with Jessica Emmerson, senior class Treasurer.
Kickoff for the Blue Devil Varsity Homecoming Football game vs. Greece Athena is scheduled for 7:15pm, immediately following the parade.
“The 2014 senior class was ecstatic to take on this parade,” said Amanda. “We are so excited to see the outcome. We believe this parade is a great way for everyone to come together as a community.
