The National Swim Games were held in Cleveland, Ohio from July 19 to August 1, 2013. They hosted 19 sports and 10,800 Senior Athletes participated. The swimming competitions were held at the Busby Natatorium Short Course Pool (25 yds.), located at Cleveland State University.
Local Brockport resident Irene D’Agostino participated in the 3 day swim meet after qualifying at this year’s Empire State Senior Games held in Cortland, NY. She placed 2nd in the 500 yard freestyle, 2nd in the 200 yard intermediate race, 2nd in the 100 yard intermediate race, 2nd in the 50 yard butterfly, 4th in the 200 yard freestyle and 7th in the 100 yard freestyle.
Swimming runs in the family. All four D’Agostino children swam for Brockport High School and at college. Mrs. D’Agostino started swimming on a regular basis 35 years ago, during her youngest daughter’s practice sessions with the MCC “Age Group” swim program coached by Steve Lochte. She qualified for her first Empire State Games in the mid-1980s after swimming in a Master’s Swim Meet and hasn’t looked back since.
These days, Mrs. D’Agostino trains at SUNY College at Brockport, where her late husband Gerry D’Agostino Sr. was head football coach (at Brockport State) in the 1970s.
This Super Senior, who will only admit to being “over 39,” plans to compete in the next Summer National Senior Games scheduled to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2015.
