While I was in high school, I, myself was dropped off the school bus at the end of my driveway, and I had a fairly lengthy 3 minute walk through my complex to my house. In recent years, I have noticed buses from my old alma mater coming into my complex and dropping children of directly in front of their homes. As far as I knew, they weren’t disabled, and I’m not here to judge if maybe I have misinterpreted what’s going on. However, I saw the same thing today from a different district, and I was appalled to see a school bus (granted, not full size) coming down from a PRIVATE non-shared driveway. The driveway is a little lengthy, yes, but nothing a teen can’t handle (It was the earlier route before elementary was let out). It baffles me to think that we are not only wasting gas but time on rather long bus routes, just so kids can be lazy? I could understand if I saw a handicapped symbol on the bus, or a wheelchair door, something to signify that there was a disabled child on the bus, but this really bothers me. Many people seem to question why America’s youth are obese, and why bus routes are so lengthy and school taxes are rising, how about we let the children off at the end of their driveway like I was? I’m only in my early 20′s, it wasn’t that long ago. It just seems frustrating to me that school buses are being treated as personal limos. Who knew?
