Random acts of kindness are those little gestures by which we make an attempt to brighten another person’s day by doing something thoughtful, nice, or caring for them. This has been the motto for Pinehurst Senior Living Community since its opening over 22 years ago. Each and every day, random acts of kindness are demonstrated by the staff and residents throughout the community as well as around our “neighborhoods”.
The residents of Pinehurst have been honoring our local veterans at the Canandaigua VA with these acts of kindness for the past ten years. Several times throughout the year, useable items are collected to distribute to the veterans in residence at the VA. However, the kindness does not stop at just this. The Pinehurst van filled with residents travels to the VA to host events throughout the year. It may be an afternoon of bingo or cards, a sing a long or just pleasant conversations.
Most recently the Pinehurst residents planned and hosted a summer Hot Dog Roast. The menu included many old time picnic favorites, including macaroni salad, cucumber salad, watermelon and chocolate cake. New friends were made and old friendships rekindled. The afternoon was filled with singing, shared memories and numerous smiles.
The greatest act of kindness is the one that is demonstrated solely because you care about another person’s well-being and want them to be happy without expecting anything in return. The thing about kindness is that it has its own rewards, both the receiver and the giver benefit from each act of kindness. We have learned through our trips to visit the veterans that one of the most precious “gifts” we can give is the “gift” of one’s time.
