The person venting in the August 30 issue of the Pennysaver about not being able to rent due to having a service dog does not understand the law. Uneder NYS Fair Housing Laws no landlord can refuse to rent an apartment to someone using a service dog. The dog does not have to be a dog for the blind, it can be any type of service dog that is needed by the person seeking an apartment. This person should visit either the Town Hall or the Fair Housing Office and get the necessary paper work to prove that this is a service dog and be able to show these documents to the landlord. A landlord can be finded for refusing to rent to someone using a service dog.
