My dog is a very proud hunter. He also is not very discerning in what he goes after as evidenced by the skunk he killed and brought home this past Sunday. His pride of showing us what he killed is admirable I guess, with this one exception. And what an exception. As he came closer with his prize, it became abundantly clear, this was no prize at all. This was a full adult skunk whose defensive weapon had to have been asleep all winter long and ready to go at full strength! Not sure if you’ve ever been sprayed by a skunk and we did not take the hit that our dog did, but when you’re that close to such a pervasive smell, it was an “all for one and one for all” moment. Scientist’s say that depending on the dog, their sense of smell is 10,000 times that of we humans. If that’s so, our dog has to learn to engage his sense of smell, sooner than his sense of pride.
